Rockport-Fulton is a paradise for bird watchers. There are opportunities year-round to enjoy the hundreds of species that call the area home, and Majestic Oak makes a fantastic base to do so.

The area hosts ten birding sites listed on the Great Texas Birding Trail, both coastal and inland. Each season brings different species. In the spring, migrating birds are attracted to the Coastal Bend’s varied habitats. During the summer months, the barrier islands are home to nesting birds, which can be seen from local boat tours. Fall brings raptors and shorebirds, and hummingbirds entertain homeowners who prepare feeders in their yards. Even winter has its own birding charm, with both resident birds and lingering migrators. You can plan a trip along the Great Texas Birding Trail by checking out the information at http://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/wildlife/wildlife-trails/ctc .

A great place in the area to enjoy world class bird watching is Fennessey Ranch, with over 4,000 acres of varied habitats, including wetlands, natural lakes, and riparian brush. The ranch’s borders serve to “trap” different species, making it a sanctuary for bird-lovers. Customized tours are available, and you can get more information at http://fennesseyranch.com .

Wildlife conservation has long been a focus of residents of the Coastal Bend. The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is a federally protected park located in our area that hosts migratory birds, as well as other wildlife, on over 100,000 acres of grasslands, wetlands, and marshes. From October- March, the refuge hosts an abundance of whooping cranes and provides updates via its website on these winter Texans. It’s hard to believe that in 1941 only fifteen of these incredible birds survived in the wild. You can learn more about whooping cranes and get information on the refuge at https://www.fws.gov/refuge/Aransas/ .

Many companies in the area offer tours and educational opportunities along the coast and inland. To find the perfect tour for you, browse a list of companies at https://www.go-texas.com/Central-Coast/Bird-watching/ #

Majestic Oak Resort looks forward to welcoming you, no matter the season, whether for bird watching or other activities. We’ve posted some updates on the status of Majestic Oak Resort and are happy to say that we are now open and able to take reservations!

Unfortunately, there are many areas of Rockport that are still working on Hurricane Harvey recovery. The curfew for the city has been lifted and businesses have begun to open back up. Rockport is resilient, and we will come out of this difficult time. If you would like to make a donation to help the Rockport-Fulton area with recovery from Harvey, you can do so at the official city and county fund here .

Rockport is currently gearing up for an event that will provide some much-needed relaxation and relief to our community. The 43 rd Annual Rockport-Fulton Seafair, is a multi-day festival from October 12 th - 15 th that will use music to help restore and uplift residents. All four days feature lots of fun for the entire family. Enjoy children’s activities, arts and crafts, a carnival, and other attractions. Local “Harvey Heroes” will be recognized at the festival, and it will be a nice break from the stress of the last six weeks.

Thursday brings a “Healing of the Bands” instead of a battle of the bands. Admission on Thursday is free and open to all from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Admission to the festival for the remainder of the weekend is via one-day ticket or a weekend pass. On Friday, country and western music takes center stage from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with the legendary Joe Diffie headlining. The festival will run all day Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Saturday’s headliners are Texas musicians Jake Ward, Hudson Moore, and you won’t want to miss the Seafood Gumbo and Chili Cookoff! Sunday’s event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and is considering a “Day of Healing.” Christian bands will perform all day, including headliner Sanctus Real. Make sure to check out the Just Desserts and Salsa Contest!

For more information on Seafair, visit the event website here .

At Majestic Oak Resort, we’ve been working hard over the last few weeks to repair our property and get ready to welcome back our guests. The Rockport-Fulton area was hit hard by Hurricane Harvey, and many businesses in the area will not reopen. But the community has come together to rebuild, and the area is slowly getting back on our feet. Majestic Oak was lucky—while we incurred damage, we were spared the worst.

Cleaning up the grounds was one of the biggest tasks, as we had significant damage to our beautiful oak trees. We cleared out all the debris and landscapers are working to get the property back to its normal appearance. We’ve prepared the area where the pool will go, so that project is moving forward. Repairs to the kitchen and rec room are going well and will be completed soon.

Because the structural damage was minimal, we’ve been working to get the urgent repairs out of the way so we can open to visitors. Then we can complete the more minor repairs without disruption of services. Right now, we have full hook-up ready, but we won’t have cable and wi-fi for a couple more weeks.

Please check the home page or call us to confirm that we are up and running for visitors before you come out. But rest assured, we’ll be back to normal operations for all our winter guests.

We’ve heard from so many of our guests since Hurricane Harvey came ashore, and we appreciate all of your kind words and thoughts. Harvey knocked us down a bit, but we got right back up and started cleaning and working to get our community back in order. We wanted to give concerned guests a little update on our progress since the storm and let you know that we’re looking forward to having you visit very soon.

Once the storm passed, and it was safe, we got to work! Our biggest loss was to our beautiful oak trees, which resulted in a significant amount of clean-up hours. Since returning on the 28 th , we’ve had equipment on site and lots of manpower to clear the park and the RV sites of debris. Repairs to our kitchen and rec room began on the 5 th , and we should have those finished quickly. We are still moving forward with the pool, but that will take some additional time to complete.

The good news is that we were lucky that the damage we sustained to our structures was minimal, so we can reopen to guests while completing the remaining work. In fact, by the time you read this update, we will hopefully have power restored and can welcome you back!

Please check the home page or call us to confirm that we are up and running for visitors. But rest assured, we’ll be back to normal operations for all our winter guests.

Just because you don’t have a boat doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of the great fishing we have in the Coastal Bend. Grab your rod and reel and head out to one of the many fishing piers in the area. You’re sure to have a great time, whether you enjoy fishing during the day or at night. No boat needed!

Both beginners and experienced anglers will enjoy Red Dot Pier on the Humble Channel. It even has lots of light to make night-time fishing easy and fun. The pier is open from 6:00 a.m. to midnight daily, with extended hours until 2:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. You can purchase bait and snacks, as well as rent equipment at the store.

Bob Hall Pier is another great spot to fish day or night. It’s only open from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, but the pier stays open 24 hours on Friday and Saturday. You’ll have plenty of time to find the perfect catch from the elevated pier, which lets you fish 1,240 feet into the Gulf. If you need equipment or bait, you can purchase it at the pier, and they even have concessions to purchase.

Both Red Dot Pier and Bob Hall Pier require a $2.00 Pier Pass for access. For more information on pier fishing in Corpus Christi, stop by the Visitor Information Center at 1590 N. Shoreline Blvd. daily between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. or visit their website here . You can learn more about required licenses and obtain them here .

August brings the start of school, so before the kids head back, why not bring them to Majestic Oak for the weekend? The Rockport Fulton area is full of activities for the whole family. Enjoy some beach time, swim, or teach the kids to fish. With so many places to enjoy the natural beauty of the Coastal Bend, you’re sure to have lots of fun in the sun!

But when you need a break from the heat, why not take the kids somewhere educational to ease them into the transition back to school? The Fulton Schoolhouse Museum is not only an interesting place to visit, it’s also a snapshot in time that children can relate to. The Museum is in the original one-room schoolhouse and is set up as it was originally. In the 1940s, the building was rebuilt to deal with hurricane damage, and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas oversaw its transformation into the museum.

Visitors will get insight into what school was like in the past and view artifacts from Fulton’s history. Your kids will be shocked at how different school was in the past. The museum is open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and you can get more information here .

Texas is full of historic sites, and the Rockport-Fulton area has one of the most spectacular. The Fulton Mansion State Historic Site lets you take a peek into the life of affluent Texans from the late 1800s. The mansion has been restored to its former glory and sits on both the Texas Historic Landmark list and the National Register of Historic Places.

Guests can tour the home, taking in its mansard roof, gas lighting, and flush toilets, features that were cutting edge during the mansion’s time. Self-guided tours using your mobile phone give you insight into the Fulton’s grand Victorian home, as well as the family themselves. Learn about George Fulton’s engineering skills and marvel at Harriet Fulton’s gardens during your tour. The Education and History Center has additional information for those interested.

Make sure to head out to the mansion on August 8 th from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for an evening of music with the folk duo of David and Barbara Brown. You can bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating, and there will be concessions available for purchase.
